Know what to do when you discover a plumbing leak and what information can help a plumber diagnose it.
Limit damage when safe
If you know the correct fixture or main shutoff and can reach it safely, stopping the water can limit damage. Keep people away from water near electrical equipment and call appropriate emergency help when safety is uncertain.
Identify the pattern
Note whether the leak is constant or occurs only when a fixture, appliance or drain is used. Photograph visible water and damage before cleanup when practical.
Do not hide the evidence
The location, timing and appearance of water can help diagnosis. Avoid unnecessary demolition or temporary products that make the source harder to inspect unless needed to protect the property.
What to ask the plumber
Ask what caused the leak, whether adjacent materials or connections should be checked, what repair is proposed, and whether the work requires access or restoration beyond the plumbing itself.
